Time for a thread not dedicated to the followers of the L.A.W.!
The postie left a card yesterday saying a package needed collecting from the sorting office, knowing what this was I skived off on a half day today to collect it.
My brand spanking new Peak PPP-M vice package bought on the back of the survey made by Hans Weilenmann (Mr Danica, flytier) and Bruce Salzberg and in consultation with Peak themselves.
Hefty box was soon opened and securely packed items pulled out and assembled in 3 minutes (OK - I do know my way around a tool room so there was no problem there!)

Put it on the table and admire from all angles and what do you get for your bucks? A no nonsense, simply machined, wholly functional vice. I opted for the Pike's Peak Package as I wanted the extra height from the riser and the option of base plate or clamp. As Hans says in the survey, this is a no frills vice that is engineered to tie flies with the minimum of fuss and adjustment. The base plate is massive compared to some I looked at but it is heavy and stable. The table clamp is a real piece of engineering and would hold anything with absolute security due to it's construction.
OK - enough, what is it like to use? I have reasonably large hands and my left hand fits over the mechanism like a glove, my pinky curls around the brass rotary barrel and my thumb and first two digits fall exactly where they are needed to handle materials for the hook. I can even open the jaws with my ring finger as it falls neatly to the lever which operates extremely smoothly with the minimum of effort. The standard jaws hold hook sizes exactly as stated from 1 down to 18 (UK sizing) with no slippage in the jaws, changing over to the midge jaws (which I opted for as a second set) then even those 26s I received from Tupps are held secure with plenty of access, slip a size 20 in and start tying - no problem with thread fouling and amazing clearance to the hook area.

![[image] [image]](http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w168/Albannach_Cuileag/DSCF0212.jpg)
Back in with the standard jaws and tie up a size 14 HD - no problem, put in a size 10 and spin deer hair and pull hard to try and move the vice on the base plate, result? Broken thread! All in all, it is exactly what I wanted and does exactly as described by Hans and Peak.
Now all I have to do is learn to tie flies!

You know what it is like when there is something that you just have to have, no amount of waiting is worth it!
Have a guess at what I will be doing for the rest of the day!

hmmmm, let me hazard a guess - figuring out how to intercept credit card bill when it arrives , or maybe trying to convince Mrs AC that this vice can also be used for DIY.
In case anyone somehow could come to a strange conclusion that I am a jealous SOB let me just say that its time that the moderators do something about the pornographic nature of AC's opeing post on this thread.
I trust that the L.A.Ps and the PPP's will not be doing their step by steps as following.
" Tying asumes a right handed tier with a PPP vice"
" Tying asumes a right handed tier with a LAW vice"

Nice vice.
You'll have to get in on the river swap now, give you more of an excuse to use it.

Your vice looks great AC.
Solid, brand spankiing new, now don't get it all covered with varnish.
Hope it brings you hours of tying pleasure

A nice setup you have there.
May I ask how you made the background stand?
Cheers, Brennan

I do not know how AC did it but years ago I bought a large free standing picture frame about A4 size & put white paper in it. The other colours I found to be useful were light green & blue. This is borne out by the amount of fly pictures & indeed step by step that use the last two as background colours. A light grey might be an option as well. One could visit somewhere like Office World & buy a plastic stand for holding letters prior to typing on the keyboard. A copy stand it may well be called, would be ideal for this purpose. Tight lines PS I too think this vice is very good & I may well consider my next one to be that self same...good choice

I have checked out this vise several times and have tried using it once. It's a very nice vice and if I was starting out in tying I believe I would most likely pick this vise. It's an excellent vise for the money and it's well built. I still like my Norvise too much to switch but if I was in need of a second vise I would choose this Peak.
Happy tying and enjoy your new vise albannach cuileag

Brennan,
what I use is a simple set up made from an old coat hanger, a stiff backing card and some light coloured card sheets held on with sellotape and kept in place with a couple of little bulldog clips, The coat hanger is bent into shape and I used a glue gun to fix it to the stiff card and then taped the coloured card sheets to the the top of this. If I want a different background, I just flip them over and clip it in place, this one has 4 colours to suit the fly being displayed. I mainly use the blue as it sets most flies off well.

Many thanks for the ideas Highlander and AC. I like the sturdiness of the freestanding picture frame and the changeability of the different coloured card. I will come up with something in the next few weeks when I get the time. It should surely beat my current setup of a crumpled A3 sheet of cardboard supported by whatever is on the desk at the time.
Thanks again, Brennan
